Biography

Saint Symphorian of Autun, also known as Symphorianus, was born to the imperial Roman nobility as the son of Senator Faustus and Blessed Augusta. He was born during a time when Christianity was not yet publicly accepted, and as a result, he became a covert Christian. As a young man, Symphorian pursued his studies in Autun, Gaul, which is in modern-day France. It was during this time that his faith and steadfast devotion to Christianity were put to the test. The provincial governor Heraclius, a pagan, ordered everyone to worship the goddess Cybele, but Symphorian refused to partake in the worship of false gods. His refusal to worship Cybele led to his arrest by Heraclius. Despite the consequences he would face, Symphorian boldly asked for tools to destroy the statue of Cybele as a symbol of his unwavering faith in Christianity. This act, seen as heresy by the authorities, resulted in his arrest and subsequent flogging. Due to his noble family background, Symphorian was given the opportunity to recant his faith and accept the Roman pagan religion. However, he firmly declined, even in the face of bribes and incentives offered to him. His unwavering commitment to his beliefs and refusal to renounce his Christian faith ultimately led to his martyrdom. On the 22nd of August in the year 178, Symphorian was martyred by beheading, executed by sword. His mother, who had been present during the trial and subsequent flogging, witnessed his martyrdom. Despite the sorrow and pain she must have felt, she encouraged her son, remaining a pillar of strength and faith until his final moments. Following Symphorian's martyrdom, a basilica was erected over his tomb by Saint Euphronius of Autun in the late 5th century. This basilica became a place of pilgrimage and veneration for many faithful Christians. Saint Symphorian of Autun has been recognized as a saint and is celebrated on the 22nd of August each year. He is revered as a role model for his unwavering dedication to his Christian beliefs, even in the face of persecution and death. While he is not known for specific miracles or insights, Saint Symphorian is recognized as the patron saint against eye problems, syphilis, and is also considered a patron for children and students. Additionally, he is the patron saint of Autun, France, where his life and martyrdom took place. Although Saint Symphorian's life ended tragically at a young age, his courage and faith continue to inspire and serve as an example to believers around the world. His story reminds us of the importance of staying true to our convictions, even when faced with adversity.
