Biography
Saint Zedislava Berka, also known as Zdislava Berka, Zedislava Berkiana, and Zdislava of Lemberk, was born around 1220 in the diocese of Križanov, Ždár nad Sázavou, Vysocina kraj, which is in modern-day Czech Republic. Born into the Bohemian nobility, Zedislava had a privileged upbringing but later faced many challenges in her personal life. She entered into a marriage that was not happy, and although she was a devoted wife and mother of four children, her relationship with her husband was often strained. Zedislava's deep devotion to her Catholic faith led her to practice extraordinary acts of charity, particularly towards the poor, which frequently caused conflicts with her husband. As a Dominican tertiary, Zedislava embraced the spirituality and values of the Dominican Order. She founded the Dominican priory of Saint Lawrence near her castle, where she had a unique and remarkable practice of receiving Holy Communion daily, a practice uncommon during her time. Zedislava is often depicted as a Dominican tertiary holding a crucifix wound with roses, symbolizing her deep Christian faith and her acceptance of the sufferings of Christ. Another representation of her is taking the place of a sick person in bed, showing her compassion and willingness to help others in need. Her impactful life and commitment to God's work earned her the recognition and veneration of many. Her feast days are celebrated on January 1st, May 30th (in the region of the Czech Republic), and January 4th (Dominicans' feast day). Zedislava Berka passed away on January 1, 1252, in Jablonné, Ceská Lípa, Liberecký kraj, in what is now the Czech Republic. Her death was due to natural causes. Her holiness and virtues were officially recognized when she was beatified on August 28, 1907, by Pope Pius X, who confirmed her cultus. Then, on July 2, 1994, Pope John Paul II decreed her heroic virtues after the Cause was re-opened. Finally, on May 21, 1995, Pope John Paul II canonized her, affirming her status as a saint. Saint Zedislava Berka is revered as the patron saint of difficult marriages, offering solace and intercession for those facing challenges within their matrimonial bonds. She is also considered a patron saint for people who are ridiculed and mocked for their piety, providing spiritual support and encouragement for those who face criticism for their deep commitment to their faith.
