Blessed Bartholomew Alvarez, also known as Bartholomew Álvares, was a renowned Catholic missionary and martyr who dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Christianity in distant lands. He was born near Braganza, Portugal, in an unknown year, displaying early signs of devotion and piety.
Inspired by his deeply rooted faith, Bartholomew joined the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, in Coimbra, Portugal. The Jesuits, a prominent Catholic religious order, were recognized for their missions and educational initiatives across the globe. Possessing an ardent desire to bring the light of Christianity to the furthest corners of the world, Bartholomew eagerly embraced the missionary lifestyle.
In due course, Bartholomew was sent on a mission to the Kingdom of Tonkin, which corresponds to modern-day Vietnam. It was a challenging endeavor, as the region was not yet familiar
with the teachings of Christianity. Nevertheless, Bartholomew undertook his mission with unwavering determination and a strong conviction in the transformative power of the Gospel.
However, his admirable attempts to evangelize were met with hostility, as the oppressors of the faith in Tonkin sought to suppress any foreign influences and maintain traditional religious practices. In March 1736, Bartholomew Alvarez was seized and arrested, enduring various forms of torture as punishment for his unwavering faith and commitment to his mission.
Despite the brutal treatment he faced, Bartholomew refused to renounce his beliefs or abandon his mission. His unwavering dedication to spreading the message of Christ earned him the status of martyrdom. He was ultimately beheaded in 1737, making the ultimate sacrifice for his faith.
