Biography

Blessed Bartholomew of Vicenza, also known as Bartholomew of Braganza and Bartolomé de Bregantia, was born around 1200 in Vicenza, Italy. He dedicated his life to the service of God and joined the Dominican Order at Bologna, Italy, where he received the habit from none other than Saint Dominic himself.

Bartholomew quickly gained a reputation as a noted preacher throughout Lombardy and Emilia in Italy. His eloquence and passion for the Gospel captivated the hearts of many, and he became known for his ability to inspire others with his words. As a result, he was frequently called upon to deliver sermons in various cities, drawing large crowds and fostering the growth of faith.

In 1253, Bartholomew's exceptional leadership and spiritual insight led to his appointment as the Bishop of Limassol in Cyprus. He carried out his episcopal duties with zeal and dedication, working tirelessly to guide and support the faithful under his pastoral care.

Two years later, in 1255, Bartholomew was transferred to the role of Bishop of Vicenza, Italy, his hometown. This new responsibility allowed him to connect with the people he grew up with and extended his service to the wider Church community. As bishop, he embraced the role of a peacemaker, actively resolving conflicts between warring factions in the region and promoting harmony and reconciliation.

Blessed Bartholomew was an influential figure and had the privilege of being a close friend of King Saint Louis IX of France. Their shared devotion to God and commitment to justice fostered a deep bond between them. Bartholomew also served as a trusted advisor to the king, offering spiritual guidance and counsel.

One of the highlights of Bartholomew's life was when he preached at the second translation of the relics of Saint Dominic in 1267. This event, which celebrated the life and legacy of the founder of the Dominican Order, was of great significance to the whole Dominican community. Bartholomew's prominent role in this ceremony emphasized his esteemed reputation as a preacher and spiritual leader within the Order.

Blessed Bartholomew of Vicenza died in 1270 in his hometown of Vicenza, Italy, from natural causes. His life was marked by unwavering faith, genuine humility, and a tireless dedication to serving both God and his fellow human beings. Recognizing his exceptional virtues, Pope Pius VI beatified Bartholomew on 11 September 1793, acknowledging his impact on the Church and his lasting legacy as a role model of holiness and service.

Today, Blessed Bartholomew of Vicenza is celebrated on his feast day, which was originally observed on 23 October but was later moved to 27 October. His life serves as an inspiration to all who seek to follow Christ and make a positive difference in the world through their faith and actions.
