Biography

Blessed Bernabé N√∫ñez Alonso, also known as Brother Alfeo Bernabé, was a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Catholic religious order founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle to provide education for the poor. He was born on June 11, 1902, in Santa María del Invierno, a village in Burgos, Spain.

From a young age, Bernabé felt a strong calling to serve God and to help others through education. He joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools and took the religious name Brother Alfeo Bernabé. He dedicated his life to teaching and caring for disadvantaged children, ensuring that they receive a quality education and learn about the love of Christ.

However, during a tumultuous time in Spanish history, the Spanish Civil War broke out, bringing persecution and violence against the Church. Brother Alfeo Bernabé, along with many other Catholic priests and religious, became targets of the anti-Catholic sentiment prevailing in those days. Despite the danger, he remained steadfast in his faith and committed to his vocation.

Tragically, Brother Alfeo Bernabé was martyred for his allegiance to Christ on July 30, 1936, in Tarragona, Spain. He valiantly refused to renounce his beliefs, even in the face of imminent death. He accepted his martyrdom with courage and grace, embracing the crown of martyrdom as a testament to his unwavering dedication to God.

For decades, the memory of Brother Alfeo Bernabé remained alive in the hearts of the faithful who admired his exemplary life and selfless service. His holy life and martyrdom were officially recognized by the Catholic Church when Pope Benedict XVI decreed his martyrdom on June 28, 2012. He was subsequently beatified by Pope Francis on October 13, 2013, in a ceremony held in Tarragona, Spain, where Blessed Bernabé N√∫ñez Alonso had laid down his life for Christ.

Today, Blessed Bernabé N√∫ñez Alonso serves as an inspiration to all who seek to live out their faith with unwavering dedication, love, and sacrifice. His feast day is celebrated on July 30th, commemorating the day of his martyrdom, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith in the face of adversity.
