Biography

Blessed Diego Oddi, also known as Giuseppi Oddi and José Oddi, was born on June 6, 1839, in Vallinfreda, Italy. He was the son of Vicenzo Oddi and Bernardina Pasquali, and he grew up in a poor but devout farm family. Despite limited formal education, Diego had a deep yearning for spiritual knowledge and dedicated himself to learning as much as he could about the Catholic faith.

Around the age of 20, Diego felt a strong calling to the religious life. However, his family vehemently objected to his desire to join a religious order. Despite their objections, Diego's determination did not waver. During a pilgrimage to Rome, he had a fortuitous encounter with Blessed Mariano da Roccacasale. Inspired by Mariano's example, Diego became resolved to dedicate his life to God as a Franciscan lay brother.

Diego entered a Franciscan monastery and spent the remainder of his life there. Known for his simplicity and humble service, he lived out his vocation with great devotion. Diego's sunny temperament and deep faith were evident to all who knew him, and he became an inspiration to his fellow monks and to the people who sought his guidance.

Blessed Diego Oddi's life was characterized by a profound love for God and a sincere commitment to serving others. Despite his lack of formal education, he demonstrated an extraordinary depth of spiritual understanding and insight. Diego's unwavering faith and dedication to a life of simplicity earned him the respect and admiration of those around him.

On June 3, 1919, Diego passed away in Bellegra, Italy, of natural causes, on the very day he celebrated his feast day. His reputation for holiness and sanctity continued to grow after his death, and on January 22, 1991, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable, recognizing his heroic virtues. Finally, on October 3, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Diego Oddi in Rome, Italy, further confirming his elevated status within the Catholic Church.

Today, Blessed Diego Oddi remains a symbol of humble and devoted service, an example to all Christians of how to live a life dedicated to God and others. His story serves as a reminder that holiness can be found in the simplest of lives and that a profound love for God can shine forth, even in the absence of worldly recognition or formal education.
