Blessed Henry of Vitskël, also known as Henry of Varnhem, was a Cistercian monk who lived during the 12th century in France. He was a devoted spiritual student of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the most influential figures in the Cistercian order.
Henry, along with many other monks from the Abbey of Clairvaux, embarked on a mission to establish new Cistercian houses in various regions. Sometime around 1150, Henry traveled to the Nordic countries and eventually became the abbot of Varnhem Abbey in Sweden. However, their peaceful existence was disrupted when Queen Christina Björnsdotter attempted to seize their property.
In search of help, Henry left Varnhem Abbey and made his way to Roskilde, Zealand, Denmark, where he arrived during a synod led by Archbishop Eskil of Lund. Impressed by Henry's character and moved by his predicament, Eskil recommended him to lead a monastery that King
Valdemar was planning to build. This marked the beginning of Vitskël Abbey, and Henry became its first abbot.
Henry's leadership saw the establishment of Vitskël Abbey as a bastion of piety and learning. He brought many of his fellow monks from Sweden to live at the new abbey, providing them a refuge from the troubles they faced. While some of these monks eventually returned to Varnhem Abbey when the pressures subsided, Henry remained at Vitskël and continued to guide the community.
