Blessed José Luis Collado Oliver, also known as Placido of the Child Jesus, was a Discalced Carmelite brother who met a courageous and tragic end during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on January 25, 1912, in Madrid, Spain.
From a young age, José Luis Collado Oliver displayed a deep love for God and a fervent desire to dedicate his life to the service of others. Recognizing his vocation, he entered the Discalced Carmelite Order and became a beloved member of the religious community.
Throughout his religious formation, Brother José Luis embraced the spirituality of the Order, which emphasized a life of prayer, contemplation, and self-denial. He strove to live a life of holiness, dedicating himself to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the example set by the Carmelite saints.
Brother José Luis Collado Oliver's peaceful life within the Carmelite Order was tragically interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. During this tumultuous period, religious persecution was rampant, and countless men and women of faith faced martyrdom for their convictions.
On July 31, 1936, Brother José Luis was executed alongside his fellow Carmelite brothers in a place called "Los Cobertizos," near Toledo, Spain. It is believed that he embraced his martyrdom with unwavering faith and courage, remaining steadfast in his devotion to God until the very end.
The heroic virtue and sacrificial witness of Brother José Luis Collado Oliver did not go unnoticed. In recognition of his martyrdom, he was venerated on April 28, 2006, by Pope Benedict XVI, who declared him a martyr for the faith. His beatification followed on October 28, 2007, further affirming his sanctity and providing an example of inspiring devotion for Catholics around the world.
