Blessed José María González Delgado, also known as José María of Granada, was a Spanish Catholic priest and member of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance. He was born on February 26, 1908, in the town of Gabia Grande, Granada, Spain.
From a young age, José María felt a calling to the priesthood and entered the Carmelite Order. He studied theology and philosophy, deepening his understanding of the Catholic faith and preparing himself for his future vocation. Known for his piety, intelligence, and dedication to his spiritual life, he quickly became a beloved figure among his religious community and the local community.
Unfortunately, during a tumultuous time in Spanish history, José María's faith would lead him to become a martyr. In the midst of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant in Spain, with many faithful Catholics, including priests and nuns, targeted for
their beliefs. José María, committed to his religious vocation, refused to renounce his faith or abandon his calling as a priest.
On July 27, 1936, José María González Delgado was martyred for his devotion to Christ and the Catholic Church. He was killed in Pueblo Nuevo, Córdoba, Spain, alongside other priests who shared his fate during that challenging period. Their deaths serve as a testament to their unwavering faith and commitment to God, even in the face of adversity and persecution.
Years after his martyrdom, the sanctity and courage demonstrated by José María González Delgado were recognized by the Catholic Church. He was venerated on July 1, 2010, by Pope Benedict XVI, who declared him a martyr. The recognition of his martyrdom highlighted the supreme sacrifice he made for his faith.
Blessed José María González Delgado was formally beatified on October 13, 2013, by Pope Francis. This beatification ceremony, held in Rome, further acknowledged his heroic virtue, holiness, and dedication to Christ. The Catholic faithful are invited to honor and seek his intercession on his feast day, which is celebrated on July 27th each year.
