Biography
Blessed Manuel Requejo Pérez, also known as Fray Manuel Requejo Pérez, was a Catholic priest and member of the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He was born on November 10, 1872, in Aranda de Duero, Burgos, Spain.
Growing up in a devout Catholic family, Manuel felt a calling to the priesthood from an early age. He entered the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, a religious community known for its commitment to serve the poor and marginalized. With a deep sense of compassion and love for humanity, Manuel dedicated his life to the service of God and his fellow human beings.
Throughout his ministry, Fray Manuel Requejo Pérez embodied the Vincentian spirit of charity and humility. He tirelessly worked to alleviate the sufferings of those in need, especially the underprivileged and the disadvantaged. His commitment to social justice and his unwavering faith in God made him a beloved figure both within his religious community and among the wider community of the faithful.
Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, which erupted in 1936, religious persecution reached its peak. On August 30, 1936, in Madrid, Spain, Fray Manuel Requejo Pérez became a martyr for his faith. He was arrested, imprisoned, and ultimately executed for refusing to renounce his Catholic beliefs. His unwavering devotion to his calling and his refusal to compromise his principles even in the face of death made him a shining example of courage and faith.
Blessed Manuel Requejo Pérez's martyrdom was recognized by Pope Francis on March 23, 2017, through a decree of martyrdom, signifying that he died for his faith. His beatification ceremony took place on November 11, 2017, also presided by Pope Francis. The ceremony was held at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, and was attended by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid.
Today, Blessed Manuel Requejo Pérez is venerated as a blessed and a martyr of the Catholic Church. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire countless individuals, reminding them of the profound importance of dedication to faith, love for humanity, and standing firm in the face of adversity.
