Biography

Blessed Marie Leonie Paradis, also known as Alodie-Virginie Paradis, was born on May 12, 1840, in L’Acadie, Quebec, Canada. She was born into a poor but deeply religious family. As a young girl, she received her education from the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Inspired by her Catholic faith and the teachings of the religious sisters who educated her, Alodie-Virginie felt a calling to dedicate her life to serving God and His people. On February 21, 1854, she joined the Marianite Sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. After three years of formation, she took her final vows in 1857, committing herself to a life of consecration and service.

Sister Marie Leonie, as she came to be known, dedicated herself to teaching and served in various locations throughout her life. She taught in Montreal, New York, and Indiana, where she brought her compassion, knowledge, and faith to countless students, making a lasting impact on their lives.

While actively engaged in educational ministry, Sister Marie Leonie developed a deep desire to contribute further to the spiritual growth of priests and seminarians. In 1877, together with fourteen other sisters, she co-founded the Poor Sisters of the Holy Family in Memramcook, New Brunswick. The congregation was devoted to assisting priests and seminarians, providing support and care for their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

The Poor Sisters of the Holy Family flourished under Sister Marie Leonie's dedicated leadership. The congregation grew, and their work extended beyond Canada, establishing communities in the United States and Mexico. Sister Marie Leonie's vision and commitment to serve the Church were instrumental in the success of the congregation.

Blessed Marie Leonie Paradis lived a life focused on selfless service and love. Her compassion for others knew no bounds, and her dedication to her religious vocation inspired those around her. She lived her life as a shining example of Christian virtues, most notably humility and charity.

Blessed Marie Leonie Paradis passed away on May 3, 1912, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Her legacy of faith, compassion, and dedication continued to inspire people long after her death. Recognizing her virtues, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable on January 31, 1981. Later, on September 11, 1984, Pope John Paul II beatified her during a ceremony in Montreal, Canada.

Blessed Marie Leonie Paradis, with her unwavering commitment to serving God and His people, remains an inspiration and a guiding light for all who strive to live a life of faith, love, and service.
