Blessed Patricio Beobide Cendoya, also known as Alejo Andrés, was born on May 15, 1889, in Azpetia, Guipúzcoa, Spain. He dedicated his life to serving God and became a professed religious in the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the De La Salle Brothers.
Throughout his religious life, Patricio Beobide Cendoya displayed a deep commitment to his faith and a strong desire to educate and guide young people in their spiritual and intellectual growth. He served as a teacher in various schools run by the De La Salle Brothers, imparting not only knowledge but also instilling values of integrity, compassion, and solidarity among his students.
Unfortunately, during the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Patricio Beobide Cendoya found himself caught in a violent conflict that shook the nation. With unwavering courage and conviction, he chose to remain steadfast in his religious
calling, fully aware of the risks and dangers he was exposed to.
On August 3, 1936, in Torrejon de Ardoz, Madrid, Patricio Beobide Cendoya was martyred for his unwavering faith. His refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs in the face of persecution and opposition led to his untimely death at the hands of those who sought to suppress religious freedom.
Recognizing his heroic virtues and his sacrifice, Patricio Beobide Cendoya was venerated on December 19, 2011, by Pope Benedict XVI, who issued a decree of martyrdom. This act of veneration acknowledged his martyrdom and affirmed his status as a Blessed in the Catholic Church.
Further honoring his memory, Pope Francis beatified Patricio Beobide Cendoya on October 13, 2013. This beatification ceremony publicly recognized his exemplary life, his martyrdom, and his intercession potential for those who seek his heavenly assistance.
