The Bishop Who Walked With His People

Alfonso Gallegos was born on February 20, 1931, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to a devout Hispanic family. From a young age he felt called to religious life, and in 1950 he entered the Order of Augustinian Recollects. He was ordained a priest on May 24, 1958, and spent his early years serving parishes and teaching in Augustinian schools across California.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Father Gallegos threw himself into the struggles of his community. In Los Angeles, he walked into gang territory to counsel young men caught in cycles of violence. He joined Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers on their marches, standing with laborers who demanded dignity and fair wages. He helped found Trabajadores de la Raza, a community organization serving Hispanic families in need.

On November 4, 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed Gallegos Auxiliary Bishop of Sacramento, making him the first Hispanic bishop of that diocese. He was ordained a bishop on January 18, 1982. As a bishop he remained close to the people, visiting parishes, celebrating Mass in Spanish, advocating for immigrants, and mentoring young priests. He was known for his humility, his warmth, and his deep prayer life.

On the evening of October 6, 1991, Bishop Gallegos stopped on Highway 99 near Yuba City to help a motorist whose car had stalled. While pushing the vehicle off the road, he was struck and killed by an oncoming driver. He was sixty years old. His death, in an act of roadside charity, seemed to capture the whole arc of his life: a man who never hesitated to stop and help. The Diocese of Sacramento opened his cause for canonization on December 4, 2005. Pope Francis declared him Venerable on July 8, 2016, recognizing his life of heroic virtue.

In His Own Words

The most important thing in life is to love God and to love your neighbor.

We must go out to the people. We cannot wait for them to come to us.
