Early life
Bernard Francis Casey, the sixth of sixteen children, was born at Prescott in Wisconsin on 25 November 1870 to Bernard James Casey and Ellen Elisabeth Murphy, farmers of Irish origin.[1] After lower school he took up various occupations: farm labourer, lumberjack, mechanic, electrician, prison guard, tram driver.[1]
Vocation
In 1892, at twenty-two, he entered the diocesan seminary of Milwaukee and, unable to pay the full fees, worked as barber among his companions.[1] Because of his age and poor basic preparation he had great difficulty in his studies, and after five years the superiors advised him to abandon the idea of the priesthood and become a religious.[1] On the eve of the solemnity of the Immacolata in 1896, at the end of the novena, he understood that the Lord was calling him to the Capuchins of Detroit, and on 14 January 1897 he began his novitiate in the convent of San Bonaventura, where he received the name Francesco Solano.[1] After the novitiate he resumed theology at the Capuchin seminary of Milwaukee, where teaching was in German and Latin, and on 24 July 1904 he was ordained a 'prete simplex', without faculties to hear confessions or preach in public.[1]
Ministry
His first obedience took him to the fraternity of Yonkers, from 1904 to 1918, as sacristan and assistant to the women who cared for the church.[1] He was then transferred to Manhattan, from 1918 to 1924, as porter and promoter of the seraphic work of masses in aid of the Capuchin missions.[1] He found himself occupied all day listening to, consoling and instructing many people, and from 1923, under obedience to his superior, kept a register in which people noted the graces received.[1] On 1 August 1924 he received a new obedience at the convent of San Bonaventura in Detroit as assistant porter, where he remained until 1945, spending as much as ten hours a day at the door and presiding at the blessing of the sick, called the blessing of san Mauro, with the relic of the holy cross.[1] He received the poor at the door of the convent without ever asking where they came from, whether they were Catholics or whether they were in real need, treating all alike.[1]
Death and recognition
On 21 July 1945 he was moved to Brooklyn (1945-1946), then to the quieter fraternity of Huntington (1946-1956) in the Indiana countryside, and after repeated hospital stays in Detroit was transferred definitively to the convent of San Bonaventura, where he died on 31 July 1957 at the age of 87.[1] He was beatified by Pope Francis on 18 November 2017.[1]
