Beato Pablo Merillas Fernández

Blessed Pablo Merillas Fernández, also known as Carlos of Alcubilla de Nogales, was a Franciscan Capuchin priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 17 July 1902 in Alcubilla de Nogales, Zaragoza, Spain.

Pablo Merillas Fernández was ordained as a priest and joined the Capuchin Franciscan Order, dedicating his life to serving God and his community. He lived a life of humility, poverty, and devotion, following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi.

During the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, when political and social tensions were high, Pablo Merillas Fernández remained faithful to his religious vocation amidst the chaos. He provided spiritual guidance and support to those affected by the conflict, offering solace and hope in a time of despair.

Unfortunately, the violence of the Spanish Civil War reached the religious communities, and Pablo Merillas Fernández became a victim of religious persecution. On 14 January 1937, in El Escorial, Madrid, he was brutally martyred for his unwavering faith.

Pope Francis recognized the heroic virtues and martyrdom of Blessed Pablo Merillas Fernández, declaring him venerable on 27 March 2013. This recognition signifies that he led a life of exceptional virtue and, ultimately, sacrificed his life in a way that exemplified his commitment to his faith.

Following the declaration of martyrdom, Pope Francis beatified Pablo Merillas Fernández on 13 October 2013. This beatification solemnly affirms that he is now in heaven, interceding for the faithful and serving as an inspiration for all those facing persecution or hardship for their religious beliefs.

Blessed Pablo Merillas Fernández is honored and remembered on his feast day, which is celebrated on 14 January each year.
