San Damiano Pham Trong Kham

Saint Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham, also known as Domenico Pham Trong (An) Kham, was born around the year 1780 in Quan Cong, Nam Ðinh, Vietnam. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he lived as a married lay Dominican in the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin (modern Vietnam). During the reign of Emperor Tu-Duc, Christianity faced severe persecution in Vietnam. It was a time when the emperor sought to strengthen the nation's traditional values and eradicate foreign influences, including Christianity. In the face of this persecution, many Christians, including Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham, remained steadfast in their faith. Despite the risks involved, Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham refused to renounce his Christian beliefs. In an act of profound courage and devotion to the Christian faith, he chose to endure extreme torture and eventual execution rather than comply with the emperor's order to stomp on a cross. On January 13, 1859, Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham embraced martyrdom in Nam Ðinh, Vietnam. His unwavering faith and sacrifice in the face of persecution served as a testament to his deep love for Christ and the Catholic Church. Years after his death, Pope Pius XII recognized the sanctity and heroism of Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham. On February 11, 1951, Pope Pius XII proclaimed him as a venerable martyr, acknowledging his martyrdom and his exemplary witness to the Catholic faith. Subsequently, on April 29, 1951, Pope Pius XII beatified Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham, officially recognizing his intercession and his presence among the blessed in Heaven. This beatification served as a powerful affirmation of his holiness and the Church's recognition of his martyrdom. Finally, on June 19, 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham, declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. This canonization reinforced the admiration and veneration that Catholics had for Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham for his unwavering faith and ultimate sacrifice. Saint Ðaminh Pham Trong Kham, also known as Domenico Pham Trong (An) Kham, is honored and celebrated on two feast days: January 13 and November 24, as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam. He stands as a powerful example of fidelity, courage, and love for the Christian faith, inspiring believers to remain steadfast in their commitment to Christ in the face of adversity.
