Biography

Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, also known as Nuestra Señora de la Merced or Our Lady of Ransom, is a significant Catholic feast celebrated on September 24th each year. This feast is dedicated to the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Mercy, highlighting her role as the compassionate mother who intercedes for those in need.

The origin of this devotion can be traced back to the 13th century when St. Peter Nolasco, along with St. Raymond of Penyafort and King James I of Aragon, founded the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, commonly known as the Mercedarians. This religious order was established with the primary aim of ransoming Christian captives captured by non-Christian forces during the tumultuous period of the Reconquista.

Our Lady of Mercy became the principal patroness of the Mercedarians, and her feast day was established to honor her intercession and protection of those held in captivity. The faithful sought her help and invoked her aid for the release of captives, especially those subjected to religious persecution and slavery.

She is particularly venerated in the Dominican Republic; Delaware, USA; Bahía Blanca, Argentina (in the Archdiocese of Bahía Blanca); Adelfia, Italy; Barcelona, Spain; Barlovento, Venezuela; Candarave, Peru; La Paz, Bolivia; Maule, Chile; Montrone, Italy; Quito, Ecuador; San Juan de Pasto, Argentina; and Santiago de Cali, Colombia. She is also recognized as the patroness of the Army of Argentina and the Daughters of the Patronage of Mary.
