Biography

Saint Illtud, also known as Illtud Farchog or Illtud the Knight, was a prominent figure in early Welsh Christianity and education. He founded the monastery and divinity school of Bangor Illtyd in Llanilltud Fawr (Llantwit Major) in Glamorgan, Wales, around the 6th century. This institution is believed to be Britain's earliest center of learning, with over a thousand pupils at its peak. Illtud was instrumental in educating many notable saints and scholars, including David, Samson of Dol, and Gildas. His contributions to religious and educational life in Wales are commemorated on November 6th.
