Saint Achillas, also known as Achillius, was the Bishop of Alexandria, Egypt, during the early fourth century. Not much is known about his early life or origins, but he played a significant role in the history of the Church. Achillas came into prominence when he ordained Arius, who later became the founder of the Arian heresy. This heresy denied the full divinity of Jesus Christ and caused a major schism in the early Church. It is important to note that at the time of Arius' ordination, his views on theology were not considered problematic, and it was only later that his teachings were perceived as heretical. Throughout his tenure as Bishop, Achillas firmly upheld orthodox Christianity and actively defended it against various theological controversies.
