Saint Elaeth the King, also known as Elaeth Frenluuin or Eleth, was a sixth-century ruler in northern Britain. His life is a remarkable story of transformation from a king to a devoted monk, and his spiritual journey is an inspiration to many. Born in Britain, Elaeth ruled as a king in the sixth century. However, his reign was filled with challenges and difficulties, particularly with the neighboring Picts. The Picts, a group of fierce warriors, posed a constant threat to Elaeth's kingdom, leading to numerous conflicts and battles. Eventually, these relentless attacks forced Elaeth to make a difficult decision. He decided to abandon his political authority and seek solace within the confines of a monastery. Fleeing from the turmoil, Elaeth sought refuge in Anglesey, Wales.
There, he sought spiritual guidance from two revered saints of the time, Saint Seiriol and Saint Meirion. Under their tutelage, Elaeth underwent a profound spiritual transformation, devoting himself entirely to a life of prayer and contemplation. He became a diligent student of these holy men, immersing himself in deep study and devotion. While Elaeth is regarded primarily as a monk, he was also renowned as a poet.
