Biography

Saint Ternan of Culross, also known as Torannan, was a highly revered fifth-century missionary bishop who dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Catholicism to the Picts in Scotland. Born in Ireland, he was consecrated as a bishop by Saint Palladius, an Irish bishop and missionary to the Gaels. Saint Ternan ventured to Scotland, using Abernethy as his base of operations for his evangelizing efforts. This region was known as a significant center for the Picts, who were a confederation of tribes inhabiting the northern parts of modern-day Scotland. With Abernethy as his base, Saint Ternan tirelessly worked to convert the Picts to Christianity. Recognizing the need for a spiritual community, Saint Ternan went on to found the monastery of Culross in the region of Fifeshire, Scotland.
