Saint Valentinian of Chur, also known as Valentinus or Valentinianus, was a renowned figure in the early Church as the Bishop of Chur, Switzerland. He was born around the year 480 and dedicated his life to serving God and his fellow human beings. Valentinian is primarily remembered for his immense charity towards the poor. He showed great compassion and generosity, giving away his own possessions to help those in need. His acts of kindness and selflessness inspired many and earned him a reputation as a true servant of God. Additionally, Valentinian devoted considerable attention to his ministry to prisoners. He recognized the importance of offering compassion and support to those who had lost their freedom. Valentinian would visit prisons regularly, providing spiritual guidance and comfort to the inmates, emphasizing the importance of repentance and forgiveness.
During his time as Bishop, Valentinian also played a significant role in supporting the people of Rhaetia. They had been displaced by invading Franks and faced numerous challenges and hardships. Valentinian worked tirelessly to provide them with solace, aid, and encouragement in their struggle. Although Saint Valentinian's physical representation is not specified, his spiritual presence and guidance have continued to inspire countless individuals throughout history. Valentinian passed away in the early year 548 of natural causes. He was interred in the tomb of the church of San Stefano, where his remains rested until the 8th century. At that time, his relics were moved to the church of San Lucio. While Valentinian's canonization occurred before the concept of formal canonization processes, he is regarded as a canonized saint in the pre-congregation era.
