During his time at Saint Victor, Bernhard developed close friendships with notable figures of the Catholic Church, including Pope Gregory VII, Saint Hugo of Cluny, and Saint William of Hirschau. These connections not only influenced his own spiritual journey but also allowed him to further contribute to the Cluniac reform movement.

Recognizing Bernhard's wisdom and dedication to the Church, Pope Alexander II elevated him to the rank of cardinal in 1065. This appointment was a testament to his exceptional qualities and his significant contributions to the Church's mission. In 1077, he was chosen by the pope to serve as a papal legate to Germany, where he played a vital role in the resolution of conflicts and the promotion of unity within the Church.

In 1078, Bernhard was appointed as a papal legate to Spain, where he worked tirelessly to bring about spiritual renewal and to combat various heresies that had taken hold in the region. His efforts to restore faith and discipline in Spain are remembered as crucial in preserving the Catholic faith and combating religious dissent.
