Biography

Blessed Berthold of Garsten, also known as Berthold de Rachez, was born around the year 1060 into a noble family. He became a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Saint Blaise in the Black Forest in Germany, where he dedicated his life to the service of God.

As a devout priest, Berthold proved himself to be an exemplary follower of the Benedictine Rule. His deep commitment to monastic life and spirituality led to his appointment as the prior of Gottweig Abbey in 1107. During his time there, he fostered a culture of discipline and devotion, ensuring that the monks under his guidance adhered to the principles of the monastic order.

In 1111, Berthold embarked on a new endeavor by establishing Garsden Abbey. As its first abbot, he dedicated himself to its growth and development, bringing the Hirsau Reforms into Austria. These reforms aimed at revitalizing monastic life by emphasizing strict observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict. Berthold's commitment to the implementation of these reforms played a significant role in the spiritual renewal of the region.

Blessed Berthold of Garsten was recognized for his tireless acts of charity towards the poor, exemplifying the Christian virtue of love of neighbor.
