The Mystic of the California Missions

Magín Catalá was born on January 29, 1761, in the medieval walled town of Montblanc in Catalonia, Spain. At sixteen he entered the Franciscan Order, drawn by the example of the great missionaries. After ordination in 1786 he volunteered for the California missions, arriving at Mission Santa Clara de Asís in 1794. He would never leave.

For thirty-six unbroken years, Father Catalá served the mission community. He learned the local indigenous languages, catechized and baptized thousands, and oversaw the physical and spiritual life of the settlement. But what set him apart was his interior life. Contemporaries reported extraordinary mystical phenomena: levitation during prayer, accurate prophecies of earthquakes and other events, and healings that defied medical explanation.

In 1812 he reportedly predicted the great earthquake that damaged several California missions, warning the faithful in advance. The people of the mission revered him as a living saint, calling him simply “the holy man of Santa Clara.” Despite his reputation, Father Catalá remained humble and devoted to the routine of mission life: prayer, sacraments, teaching, and care of the sick.

He died on November 22, 1830, and was buried beneath the mission church. His cause for beatification was initiated in 1882 by Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany of San Francisco, making it one of the oldest open causes in the United States. Testimony was submitted to Rome in 1909. Although the cause has stalled, it has never been formally closed, and devotion to Father Catalá continues among the faithful of the Santa Clara Valley.
