Saint Juan Diego, also known as Cuauhtlatoatzin or Juan Diego Cuautlatoatzin, was born in 1474 in the village of Tlayacac, Cuauhtitlan, located approximately 15 miles north of modern Mexico City, Mexico. He was born into a society marked by strong class divisions, and he grew up in poverty as a farm worker and field laborer. Juan Diego, a married layman with no children, possessed a mystical and religious spirit, even in his earlier years as a pagan. It was around the age of 50 that Juan Diego experienced a profound conversion to Christianity, assuming the name Juan Diego. Following the untimely death of his wife in 1529, he dedicated himself even more fervently to his newfound faith. On December 9, 1531, Juan Diego had a life-altering encounter. The Virgin Mary appeared to him at the hill of Tepeyac, near Mexico City. During this apparition, Our Lady of Guadalupe, as she later came to be known, left Juan Diego her image imprinted on his tilma, a traditional cloak made of cactus fibers. The image, which still exists today, is believed to be a miraculous sign from the Virgin Mary. The appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe brought great joy and faith to the indigenous people of Mexico, as it signified the special love and attention of the Virgin Mary for them. This event also played a significant role in the evangelization efforts of the Catholic Church in the region. Saint Juan Diego, now widely recognized as a visionary, became an important figure in spreading the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and promoting her devotion. His humble and faithful witness to the apparition contributed to the conversion of numerous indigenous people to Christianity. Following his life of faith and service, Saint Juan Diego passed away on May 30, 1548, due to natural causes. His beatification took place on April 9, 1990, by Pope John Paul II at Vatican City, with a special recognition celebrated on May 6, 1990, in Mexico City. He was later canonized on July 31, 2002, by Pope John Paul II at the basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico. Saint Juan Diego is regarded as the patron saint of World Youth Day 2019, symbolizing his relevance and influence on the younger generation's spiritual growth and faith.
